Some shows entertain. Others explode onto the stage like a glitter bomb and leave the audience grinning long after the final note fades.
Bernie Dieter’s Club Kabarett does exactly that.
From the moment the doors open, the Spiegeltent hums with anticipation. The band is already playing as the audience streams in, setting the rhythm for the night ahead. Performers roam the room, light beams sweep across the crowd, and the atmosphere promises that something wickedly entertaining is about to begin.
One delightfully oddball mischief maker on stage entertains the room before the show has even begun, crafting balloon animals and performing clever swallowing tricks that are equal parts curious and hilarious. It is chaotic, playful and utterly captivating. The tone is set.
Then Bernie arrives.
Her entrance has the same commanding flair fans of her shows have come to adore. She sweeps onto the stage with towering confidence, razor sharp wit and that extraordinary voice. Deep, sultry, powerful and rich with smoky cabaret texture, she commands the room within seconds.
Bernie Dieter is not just a performer. She is a force.
Backed by a tight three-piece band, the music surges through the tent with intoxicating energy. It is live, raw and perfectly matched to the decadence unfolding on stage.
“Tonight’s intention is all about letting go, getting loose and getting a little intimate with one another,” Bernie purrs early in the evening. The audience needs very little encouragement.
Soon she has recruited four willing participants from the crowd, affectionately dubbed Beardy, Sexy Speccsy, Shaven Haven and Man with Tiny Shorts. Their slightly petrified but enthusiastic participation becomes one of the night’s most hilarious moments. Bernie leans in, eyes sparkling, and purrs, “I could stay here all night staring into your sexy and slightly petrified eyes.” The audience howls.
Around her, a dazzling parade of misfits and mischief makers take to the stage.
A tap dancer explodes into action with lightning-fast footwork and irresistible charisma, the musicians joining his rhythm until the number reaches fever pitch as Darude’s iconic dance track builds and builds.
A sultry fire-breather in lingerie commands the stage with hypnotic confidence. Flames leap into the air as the crowd collectively holds its breath.

A contortionist bends and twists into shapes that defy logic, drawing gasps from the audience.
A drag singer delivers both sass and striptease with unapologetic glamour.
A trapeze artist soars above the stage with breathtaking strength and grace, commanding the air with dramatic presence.
And then there is the sword swallowing. Enough said.
It is bold, provocative, cheeky and outrageously entertaining. Balloons, cake, glittering costumes, fire, dance, live music, sky-high boots and sequinned heels all swirl together in a spectacle that feels both chaotic and impeccably polished.
And yet beneath the decadence lies something more.
Watching the show on International Women’s Day added another layer of resonance. At one moment Bernie appears wearing an outfit emblazoned with bold declarations, “My Body My Choice” across sweeping cape wings and “You Will Never Own Me” across her dress. Referencing statistics about women affected by anti-abortion laws in the United States, she pauses, visibly emotional, before moving seamlessly into a haunting and deeply poignant song.

It is a powerful moment in a show that balances outrageous humour with genuine heart.
Later, Bernie speaks about connection in a world increasingly divided and polarised. The message lands beautifully. In a room full of strangers, laughing together, cheering together and sharing the sheer joy of live performance, it feels entirely fitting.
By the time the final bows arrive, the audience is buzzing. People spill out of the tent smiling, laughing, buoyed by the experience.
This is cabaret at its most exhilarating. Slick, fearless, provocative and joyfully unapologetic.
If I could give it six stars, I would.
