Having been thoroughly enthralled by Australian actor Rob Carlton’s story telling at Holden Street Theatres maybe two Fringes ago, it was difficult to see how he could top that performance. But he did!
You’ll probably recognise Rob from his roles in various TV shows – this reviewer remembered him in particular as a young Kerry Packer in “Paper Giants – The Birth of Cleo”, a captivating and enigmatic performance. He’s also appeared in The White Lotus, Black Snow, North Shore, Boy Swallows Universe, A Moody Christmas, Blue Heelers, All Saints, Water Rats and Home and Away. Chances are, you would have seen him somewhere!
Now, he’s a “Virgin in a Knife Fight”. An unlikely title it has to be said – but this is storytelling at its finest. Four diverse stories miraculously and seamlessly blended together in a performance of clever dialogue, wit and pathos. Delivered with perfect timing, a little help from Rob’s middle finger peeping out from an unlikely location, and a singular black chair on stage. And if ever you’re in court on a drink driving charge (or an RSL member) – remember the “Meat Tray Defence”.

Rob Carlton
In Rob’s own words: “My show is about the different surprises we get at different times of life. When we’re young it’s the world coming at us that can freak us out. I was 18 years old hitchhiking around Europe when a man came at me with a knife! A few years later it was me that surprised me – with my own bad behaviour. A few years after that a mate went to court and pulled off a heist we still can’t believe. And when I was 50 the shock came from loved ones, the fear came from within and it reminded me how strange and wiggly and wonderful life can be”.
Rob’s ability to connect and engage with his audience is remarkable. One feels like it is just you he is yarning to, and this reviewer came out wanting more.
Can thoroughly recommend.
